South Africa's 21 million youth represent a "demographic dividend" — the promise of prosperity from a young workforce. But with unemployment near 46% and inequality deepening, that dividend could become a time bomb instead. Through our accelerator with Harambee, young entrepreneurs are betting on self-employment, driven by one simple goal: make money, make a difference.

Occupation < Vocation
We must choose between an occupation, which fills our time, and a vocation, which calls us to spend it meaningfully. True callings show themselves through a persistent knock — an idea that won't leave — and listlessness in work that drains rather than energizes. After 13 years in advertising, I felt that drain, so I followed the knock and founded Heavy Chef instead. As my friend Colin once said: "Follow your energy."
Our Funding Model
Our funding model is community-powered. 10% of every Heavy Chef member fee is donated to the Foundation, funding entrepreneur research and development on the ground. Global partners match that commitment with their own.
