Research conducted by Heavy Chef reveals that the bulk of African entrepreneurs struggle with financial literacy. Many entrepreneurs struggle with basic concepts such as gross profit, net profit, balance sheet, income statement, cloud accounting and the difference between a debtor and a creditor. In November 2023, Heavy Chef is featuring two stellar superstars of the accounting world on our stage to demystify accounting for startups. We will reveal ways to work more efficiently and focus on the 'least you need to know in order to succeed'. Mathabo Makhanya CA(SA) is currently serving as the Group Financial Manager – Health at Harmony Gold Mining Company. In her role, she oversees the financial strategy for the health of 44,000 employees.
With extensive experience as a board member, Mathabo sits on the board of Mine Workers Provident Fund (MWPF) and its various sub-committees, including the Investment Sub-Committee and Audit & Risk Sub-Committee. Her responsibilities encompass managing R34 billion in assets for approximately 70,000 members in the mining industry.
Mathabo is also a member of the SAICA ethics committee. She has been recognized for her leadership qualities and achievements, winning in the "Authentic Leader" and "Lift Up Leader in Business" categories at the YLC Young Leaders Connect (YLC) inaugural 2022 awards. Additionally, she is the Overall Winner of the SAICA 35 under 35 competition for 2022, acknowledging her impactful work in empowering women and driving diversity, equity, and inclusion in her various roles.
Jacques Le Grange (CA)SA is a co-founder and Director at Outsourced CFO, is driven by a vision of businesses playing a redemptive role in society.
Recognising early on the impact of work environments on individuals and communities, he endeavours to leverage business as a tool for societal upliftment. His journey towards this goal began at Stellenbosch University, where he started his studies towards the CA(SA) designation and met his future co-founders. His subsequent experience at a mid-sized audit firm in Cape Town exposed him to the unique challenges startups and scaling businesses face. This exposure together with his co-founders sparked the idea for Outsourced CFO, aiming to integrate professional financial expertise into SMEs and scaling businesses to foster their success.
After a three-month sabbatical, Jacques joined OCFO, where, for the last decade, he has led the Cloud Accounting division as Director of Cloud Accounting and serving as Director of Finance. His focus is on building teams that empower entrepreneurs through robust finance functions using the latest cloud technology. Jacques resides in Cape Town with his wife and son.
Tshepo Kgapane is a passionate social entrepreneur, financial literacy speaker, educator, and podcast host. As the Product Lead at WaFunda, he leads the groundbreaking financial education tool, Blackbullion South Africa.
For over 8 years, Tshepo has been empowering youth through financial education. He has formed strong alliances with prominent financial service providers and organized a series of free educational events that have inspired over 2000 young individuals. His impact extends beyond live events, as he has successfully launched captivating podcasts for EasyEquities and Luno. His influence extends to spearheading savings campaigns and contributing as a trusted voice on Metro FM.
Tshepo's vibrant energy, extensive knowledge, and ability to connect with people are revolutionizing how financial education is done, making him a catalyst for change. Tshepo has also started his journey to acquiring his MBA at the University of East London in the UK.
