It all started at university. I was a typical matriculant and didn't really know what I wanted to do. So I did the whole enrol for a business degree thing and very soon got totally passionate about economics.

Capitalism refers to a market system, a country's economy which is free from government intervention. A capitalist economy is an economy which has very little government input with regard to the setting of prices, monopolistic behavior and competitive behavior.

Very simply, the government earns revenue from one main source and that's tax. The government provides what's called public goods. Public goods are, for instance, a road network, harbours, electrical infrastructure, education, etc.

I know it sounds a bit weird, but you should see the Receiver of Revenue, which is the name of the government organization that collects the tax, as your partner. First of all, the way tax works is that you pay tax on profits, but if you have losses, you get given a tax credit.

The first decision entrepreneurs have got to make is, what legal form is their business going to take on? A lot of entrepreneurs, I see, make the mistake of trying to complicate their lives very early on.

The biggest challenge, in my opinion, in South Africa as well as the rest of the world, is this massive inequality that we face. I mean, it's radical. According to the research that we've done, the numbers are shocking.

It comes down to employment. In any developing country, the biggest sector in assisting unemployment is the entrepreneurial space, the small business space. That is the sector that creates job opportunities, so absolutely.

So entrepreneurs that start off don't get someone competent to assist them with company registration, payment of tax, the registration of tax, and they end up just getting sucked into this administrative nightmare and taking their focus off the business.

The biggest misconception about SARS, the revenue authorities, is that they don't have seriously sharp people working for them. The reality is they do. But they're a company and like any business, we tend to focus on our top clients.

There's tax evasion and there's tax avoidance. Tax evasion is criminal. That is not paying tax and you can get into serious, serious trouble. I mean, proper trouble. But tax avoidance is perfectly legitimate. As I said, you've got this set of rules and, quite frankly, you need to make those rules work for you.
