Nwabisa Mayema thrives on people, partnerships and connection, and describes herself as an entrepreneur for entrepreneurs. Her big vision for herself was born as a teenager when she was a member of a high school debating team that participated at a United Nations event in New York. Since then, the accolades have been streaming in.

In 2005, she was named one of 100 Brightest Young Minds in South Africa and in 2014 she finished top five in the Goldman Sachs-GIBS 10 000 Women Certificate Programme. Nwabisa was selected to participate in the United States Department of State International Visitor Leadership Program (Change Makers in Social Entrepreneurship) in 2015 and in 2016 the Independent Media Group listed her on its Top 100 Young Independents: Inspiring and Aspiring Young South Africans (Innovation category).

She participated in the Austrian Leadership Programs (ALPS), hosted by the Austrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 2017 and was nominated as one of 50 Inspiring South Africans in the same year. In 2018 Nwabisa was nominated to participate in a second International Visitor Leadership Program (the first time that the Department of State created a programme for alumni) which recognised women alumni as economic multipliers.

About This Recipe

The big distinguishing factor between successful and unsuccessful businesses is purpose, says Nwabisa Mayema, the strategic partnerships director at the Branson Centre of Entrepreneurship South Africa. She also links impact entrepreneurship to purpose and outlines her preferred process for uncovering an individual’s purpose and that of a business.

Nwabisa furthermore outlines the challenges South African entrepreneurs face, and explains how partnerships and collaboration can help entrepreneurs overcome those hurdles.

She emphasises the importance of keeping things real when engaging young entrepreneurs, and highlights the potential pitfalls of a national mindset that glorifies entrepreneurship to an unrealistic level.
