Ntuthuko Shezi
Investing In Farming
In this recipe, Ntuthuko Shezi who is the founder and CEO of Livestock Wealth, shares his innovative take on investing in farming.
Tuck InNtuthuko Shezi owns the label of serial entrepreneur. He started the first of his 14 businesses (some failed while others succeeded spectacularly) while still at school. He has put his formal education as an electromechanical engineer and corporate experience as a strategy consultant at Accenture to good use in his entrepreneurial ventures.
One of Shezi’s most successful ventures is Scratch Mobile, the world’s first ever airport-based panel beating and spray painting business. Based at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, the business recently celebrated its 11th anniversary. His car-bumper-recycling business in his rural hometown in KwaZulu-Natal won an African award and was featured on the Shark Tank TV series in 2016.
His latest venture, Livestock Wealth, is arguably one of his most creative. Built on the pioneering concept of crowdfarming, Livestock Wealth allows people who find the stock market complicated and intimidating to invest in farms through owning cattle. In 2017 his invention won the highest prize at the SAB Foundation Social Innovation Awards.
Shezi holds two patents, 12 trademarks and more than 80 local and international domains. He has met two US Presidents and is a Clinton Democracy Fellow (2005) and a Mandela Washington Fellow (2014).

About This Recipe
In a world besotted with technology, Nthuthuko Shezi chose agriculture as his latest business venture back in 2014. Having experienced firsthand how difficult it is to get a foothold in farming, he created a business model based on cattle as a store of wealth. The result is Livestock Wealth, an investment platform that links people who want to own cattle with farmers who already have herds. And yes, there is a lot of tech involved.
Shezi firmly believes in the power of protecting one’s intellectual property, and shares in this recipe how he patented Livestock Wealth and continues to protect the online real estate around his business.
Other topics include nonfood and micro-scale opportunities in agriculture, the imperative to prepare your business for external investment, and the tech challenges inherent in keeping track of grazing cows.
