One Minute Interview
Justin Spratt on Tech Trends to hit Africa
Heavy Chef spoke to technologist Justiin Spratt prior to his Heavy Chef presentation at next week's Heavy Chef event in Johannesburg.
Justin, what will your new role at Uber entail?
"Head if Business Development, Sub-Saharan Africa"
Moving from agency to corporate, what will you miss - and what will you really not miss - about advertising?
Miss: talented creative people with passion. What they do is of huge value and It defies all business logic. It's like magic. It's the anti-MBA and yet is critical to innovation in business.
Not miss: having to sell 'creative value' to procurement types who are measured purely on cost savings. There is little alignment in a negotiation and therefore a market failure in the industry that delivers marketing for business.
What are you most excited about in emerging tech trends?
Ability for the internet to disrupt hegemonic industries where the benefits of that creative destruction flow to the most in need - to the least educated and least financially well off. In Africa, I think education and transport, in particular, will have step-change affects in the next decade as it unlocks and connected the pent up talent of the other 900 million people on the continent.
Thanks Justin! - we look forward to your presentation in Johannesburg next week.
