E-Commerce In South Africa
The first Johannesburg Heavy Chef session for 2013 was headlined by two innovative leaders in South Africa’s e-commerce space. One of them was Andrew Smith – the co-founder of Yuppiechef.
Smith shared the story of how Yuppiechef was born in 2006 as an e-commerce start-up that had no brand and no commercial backing. In its first year it made only 8 sales – 7 of which were purchases by family and friends. The first “real” customer received a hand-written card to express their gratitude and this gesture has become a synonymous trademark of the brand.
Word of mouth marketing was the only tool at Yuppiechef’s disposal during its early days. Now, its one of the country’s most loved e-commerce brands. At the centre of its success, is unrelentingly excellent customer service.
